Dublin's Ha'penny Bridge is being closed until July to facilitate major repairs, and will stay closed until July. A temporary footbridge is being provided beside the existing bridge during the closure.
The repairs involve the conservation and restoration of the existing railings, replacement of the deck, cleaning and repainting the whole structure. All of the original fabric of the bridge is to be re-used and retained where possible.
A large barge now in the river is to allow the temporary footbridge, which will be used during the closure, to be assembled in one piece.
It will then be floated into position and in a single lifting operation, be put in place just downstream of the Ha'penny Bridge. Interference with traffic on the quays is to be kept to a minimum.
