For wine buffs who like to store wine the traditional way, the basement of 67 Anglesea Road offers an example of what can be achieved.
It was made with brick recycled from the basement excavation. If storing wine long term, a cellar needs to be kept at 12 degrees celsius with 60-70 per cent humidity. John Taylor of Febvre Co (01-216 1400 or www.febvre.ie) used a Eurocave system to recreate the conditions of an old cellar. A similar unit will cost around €3,000 depending on the size. The brickwork, which took four days, also cost €3,000.
If you have less space and your concern is more function than aesthetics, shelf racking can be a cheaper option, from €1,500. Failing that a wine fridge will also do the job. Eurocave fridges cost between €1,600 and €15,000 and have compartments to keep red wine at room temperature, white chilled and and at cellar temperature for storage.
