Co Wicklow: €570,000A restored schoolhouse in the picturesque Glen of Imaal will do its darndest to seduce anyone prepared to drive down for a viewing. Ganly Walters is quoting €570,000 by private treaty for The Old School House at Knockanarrigan, a three-bedroom stone house with a great deal of character.

The quaint rambling house was built in 1834 and was the local schoolhouse of the area for 134 years, closing for good in 1968.

At 168sq m (1,808sq ft), the house would accommodate a family willing to put up with the 32-mile journey to the city. Beyond the cheery red front door is an airy sittingroom which was once the main school room. Ceilings with exposed oak beams are extra high and the fireplace wall has been painted red to match the doors and window frames. A stove is fitted into the antique slate fireplace and three chandeliers add a luxurious touch.

A door connects to a country-style kitchen/breakfastroom with walnut units, granite worktops and a Belfast sink. The range of Bosch appliances - including a smart range cooker - are part of the sale.

There is also a family room with Gothic stone fireplace and beamed ceiling. An arch leads into a garden room with two Gothic arches, stone and beamed ceiling and Victorian windows looking out on the lawn.

Through another Gothic arch and down a hallway are two bedrooms with sash windows and carpets and a downstairs shower room. Upstairs is the main bedroom suite, with a walk-in wardrobe, bathroom with roll-top bath and power shower and recessed lighting.

Outside the house, there is enough space for the most avid gardener, with a granite-flagged courtyard at the side and split-level lawn edged with flowers, trees and shrubberies. A thatched gazebo with bog oak tables and chairs strikes an exotic note.
