Thatcher’s power-dressing clothes and handbags for sale

There's likely to be worldwide interest in Tuesday's auction at Christie's in London of clothes, jewellery, handbags and other items owned by the late Margaret Thatcher, British prime minister from 1979-1990, who died in 2013. She defined "power dressing" for women in the 1980s.

Among the highlights: a "Tank" raincoat by Aquascutum that she famously wore during a visit to British troops in Germany in 1986 is estimated at £10,000-£20,000; the Iron Lady-style camel-coloured cashmere coat with a mink collar by Aquascutum she wore to Moscow in March, 1987, is £1,500-£2,500; and a classic navy-blue leather handbag by Launer, London, together with a Washington University silk scarf (£2,000-£3,000).

Even her wedding outfit is for sale – the midnight blue velvet dress, blue velvet soft brimmed cap with a curled pink ostrich feather and a blue velvet muff is estimated at £10,000-£15,000.

Among the jewellery, the top lot is an art deco emerald and diamond necklace by Chaumet, circa 1930, estimated at £120,000- £180,000; a George III diamond flower brooch (£8,000- £10,000); and a two-row cultured pearl necklace (£1,000-£1,500).
