Orla Kelly, colour specialist with Colourtrend paints, loves this Modern federation house kitchen byBrett Mickan Interior Design in Sydney. Choose earthy tones such as Colourtrend’s Nettle Soup, a textured emulsion from the contemporary collection, on walls. Paint cabinets with Grey Door, a natural blue from the Historic collection. “A cool white such as Winter’s Breath in satin finish on units, skirting boards and woodwork is key to creating crisp unity,” says Kelly. bmid.com.au

This simple white Silstone island has been souped up by clever use of colour. Linc Thelen of Chicago-based Linc Thelen Design, channeled the 1980s-style combination, painting the front of the island deep slate blue while the supporting metal column is a contrasting primary red. Simple vanilla gloss units to the rear coupled with almost black walls help to create a strong sense of contrast. lincthelen.com

Urban is a new design from German manufacturer Siematic. It deconstructs the fitted kitchen to fit into loft- and open-plan living. It also recalls the modernist origins of the brand, which launched in 1929. The retro lines of the buffet, €15,000, a piece of freestanding furniture designed to fit into a lounge, would please your granny. With the dining room in a narrow space, Sydney-based Emily Knight Design and Rudolfsson Alliker Associates Architects devised a solution to make the space between the kitchen and outdoor courtyard appear larger, while solving the storage problem. The stone cladding of the column also wraps around the whole cantilevered island. Neptune’s Henley kitchen has been given an industrial aesthetic that features brass handles. Made from solid oak, it is set against raw concrete walls that lift the matt black countertops. The central island is an optical illusion, created by the stylist for the shoot. Made from two Carter coffee tables on top of each other, it may not be robust enough for family life but it looks sleek and may even make it into the Neptune catalogue. This painted kitchen is the result of a collaboration between Gillian Murphy of Murphy Austin Architects and Newcastle Design. The lack of above-counter units helps to create a streamlined space that includes a big pantry. London-based Art Buro installed this packing-crate- inspired kitchen, using natural and black-painted oak, a design from Wrkbnch’s K*Box collection, into the period grandeur of a Parisian apartment. It’s a look that combines the best of barn conversion detailing with the beauty of bare wood, a material that kitchens are returning to after a long love affair with paint colour and laminated neutrals.
