Name change means HOK has had its day

As of this week, Savills HOK is no more. The estate agency is now operating under the name of Savills. London-based property firm Savills bought Hamilton Osborne King in 2006 for €50 million and it was just a matter of time until the HOK element of the brand was dropped. The Ganly Walters brand suffered a similar fate when the firm was bought by London-based company Knight Frank in 2007. The rebrand at Savills is nothing new - this is the fourth time the company has changed its name.

The company traces it origins back to the purchase of Smyth Griffin on Dawson Street by the Belfast firm Osborne King and Megran in 1956. The firm's name was changed to Osborne King and Megran in 1958.

The company moved to Molesworth Street in 1967 and opened a Cork office in 1972 and a Galway office in 1973.

It then merged with Hamilton Hamilton in 1987 and became Hamilton Osborne King. HOK become one of the smartest outfits in town - at one stage the agency had its own directors' diningroom where the deals of the day were discussed.
