House on a Phibsborough Parade has much to celebrate
What and where
The house is on Connaught Parade in Phibsborough. It is a two-bedroom artisan terraced home, built at the turn of the last century to house Dublin tram workers.
Describe the house
Number 4 has been extensively modernised since we bought it eight years ago.
In addition to rewiring and new plumbing, there is a new bathroom, kitchen, doors and windows. We have been careful to maintain and enhance the original features along the way.
The exterior has been restored to the original Dolphin's Barn brick, and new railings have been added to match the long-gone originals.
Why are you moving?
Our son Noah was born eight months ago, so we're returning to our roots in Skerries, where both sets of grandparents live just a few minutes from each other. Babysitting on tap . . .
What is the best thing about it?
The size of the livingroom surprises everyone who enters. It's much bigger than expected in a house of this size, and is the central hub for all activity.
In keeping with our measures to keep a link with the past while modernising, one feature wall is papered with newspapers from the 1940s which we found under the floorboards.
Having both front and back yards, and back lane access, gives the house a sense of space not common in similar developments so close to the city centre.
And the neighbourhood?
There are plenty of amenities in the area, and the redevelopments in Phibsborough will see this enhanced. Mount Bernard Park, a hidden gem, is opposite. The Botanic Gardens and Phoenix Park are all within easy walks from the house, while O'Connell Street is only 10 minutes by foot.
Who would like your home?
It would be perfectly suitable for a professional couple, a young family, or downsizers - Connaught Parade has a mix of all, in addition to plenty who have been there for generations.
