Anticipating property needs for your twilight years is always to be commended. Tempus fugit and all that. A listing on a UK property website though may be bringing the notion a little far.
A family tomb in Oporto, Portugal, is described on rightmove.co.uk as a "one-bedroom character property for sale" and can be purchased for €47,500.
The listing invites potential buyers to “chill out with family and friends” in the centrally located vacant tomb that “sleeps 12”.
We're told this piece of tranquil, low-maintenance real estate was a family tomb built for Portuguese poet, Antonio Nobre, who died in 1900. The tomb was built by his brother in 1907and the body was removed from its temporary resting place and settled in what was to become the family tomb.
A quick call to Russell & Decoz, the estate agents for the tomb, confirmed that it is a genuine listing.
Julie Russell says it has been on their books for a while, but it generates quite a lot of interest. They have had requests to buy it for use as a coffee shop and ice cream parlour.
However, when they say it sleeps 12, it turns out all 12 would need to satisfy the cemetery criterion to access the dwelling. That would be the sleep of the dead then?
“It has to be purchased for the use for which it was intended.” Now there’s an opportunity that really is out of this world.
