SECOND HAND SENSE:THERE IS no denying the place of the BMW 3-Series in the affections of medium-sized premium car buyers. It has a classic pedigree and the coupé version is still a first choice among those looking for driving pleasure, writes Donal Byrne.

Close on its heels is the Audi A4, a car that is driven through the front wheels - unlike the BMW - and, therefore, does not offer quite the same driving experience. That argument apart, however, both cars are seeking to attract the same owners.

The A4 has just been replaced and there is a big selection of second-hand A4s on the market, with the emphasis on the 1.9-litre TDi (turbo diesel) version for long-haul junior executive travel. There are, of course, other choices such as the 1.6-litre petrol and the 1.8-litre petrol versions. The 1.6-litre is under powered for the size and weight of the A4 and the 1.8-litre is the better petrol option. In terms of choice, the diesel offers the widest selection.

The A4 is a very well-built car. It has good looks, a well-finished interior, and the 2005 to early 2008 model was a big improvement in terms of comfort and space. It still has limited rear leg and boot space - both were not really rectified until the new model. Up front is best for the driver and passenger.

There is a quality finish overall and, while the ride and handling may not match that of the BMW, they are better than average.

Audi build quality has been improving greatly in recent years, and recalls have reduced significantly. Apart from some cars suffering electrical failures (a common complaint about newer cars) and some engines stalling, the A4 has been keeping its owners happy. The A4 replacement of 2005 did not have a EuroNCAP crash test, but the previous model had a four-star rating.

Most cars have good equipment levels - often better than an equivalent Mercedes C-Class - but they do still carry a premium car price tag. However, dealers have no choice but to haggle with intent these days.

A 2006 1.6-litre petrol model, with extras like electronic stability, multiple airbags and dual zone air conditioning, and with 54,000km up, is on offer from one dealer for €26,950. A 2006 diesel with the same equipment and 36,000km is on offer for €26,900.
