While an environmental theme dominated the Frankfurt motor show, there's no escaping the fact that the real stars of the show were amongst the worst environmental offenders.

It was very difficult to get excited about Mercedes-Benz's Bluetec or Volvo's plug-in C30, when across the corridor Michael Schumacher was unveiling his latest pet project, the F430 Scuderia, a car which he played a significant part in developing.

The lightweight, racing pedigree version of the F430 was unveiled by the seven-times world champion to a flurry of camera shutters and for an extra €30,000-odd (who is counting), over the standard car's €270,000 price tag, you get a car that has been stripped of 100kg of weight, gets a power boost to 510bhp and now boasts a power to weight ratio of just 2.45kg per bhp.

It features a more aerodynamic shell and a faster F1 gearbox coupled to a more sophisticated traction control system and a new functionality that allows adjustment of the dampers to cope with poor surfaces - such as the Nurburgring. This is the Ferrari for hardcore aficionados.

Meanwhile over at Lamborghini, chief executive Stephan Winkelmann unveiled a special edition of the Murciélago, which looked like a stealth bomber and will cost a cool €1,000,000 before local taxes. Just 20 of the Reventón will be made - which comes with a carbon fibre composite body shell and a 6.5-litre engine putting out 640bhp.

And before you lotto winners rush out with your cheque book, be aware that only special Lamborghini "friends" and collectors will be invited to buy the car. Ah well.

Meanwhile, Porsche unveiled its concept for a Cayenne Hybrid, an oxymoron if ever there was one. Sitting alongside the new Cayenne GTS, 911 GT2 and 911 Turbo Cabriolet, how they kept a straight face as they unveiled their "green" Porsche was beyond most observers.

At Audi, while the big news was of course the new A4, the new 580bhp Audi RS6 was also unveiled, ensuring that for every new Hybrid there is a gas-guzzling autobahn muncher waiting to undo all the good work.
