Following the kindred spirit and Kinetic Design language of recent Ford models, the Mondeo takes on many of the style features of the S-Max and the new Galaxy.

A glimpse inside the S-Max gives an indication of what to expect from the Mondeo. A similar T-shaped central console flows down between the front seats, housing typical Ford controls. Two central circular air vents and two individual vents at the extremes also give it a familiar feel. Indeed some of the style panelling and internal door handles are the same as the S-Max and Galaxy.

Externally, the Mondeo takes on a defined wedge shape similar to the VW Passat. Initial thoughts were that the front end also compares in looks to some Volvo models with its stepped bonnet and double grill. Deep-set under-bumper fog lamps, large tear-drop wrap-around head lights and a chrome strip across the front edge of the bonnet are the stand-out features up front.

At the back, the outstanding feature is the concave shape of the boot lid. Here the boot lid rises up to the rear wing levels from a lower centre point. Pronounced triangular rear lamps dominate the rear end and yet don't overpower the overall image. The distinctive side profile carries similar but elongated side window lines featured in the S-Max and the very strong wheel arch lines that are now a signature Ford feature.

Having had the opportunity also to travel in the rear seat of the car few will complain about the space provided. Mondeo test cars provided were still work-in-progress vehicles and the final finishing touches and materials didn't represent exactly how the end product will be dressed.

Given what we already know about the Kinetic Designed language in the other models we can assume similar materials and build quality. A quick look into the boot showed it offers generous space and easy access.

A wide range of dependable Ford powertrains will be offered, from the proven Ford Duratorq 2.0-litre TDCi diesel and a high-performance 2.5-litre turbocharged Duratec petrol engine also fitted to the new S-MAX, to efficient 1.6-litre Duratec petrol and 1.8-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engines. The new Mondeo goes on sale here in early summer with prices and specification details being announced closer to the launch date.
