Rides: Vespa PX 125

Why were you attracted to this scooter?

The Vespa is a design icon as well as being a very practical machine. It's simple and inexpensive to maintain and with petrol prices going the way they are, it's easy on the wallet at the pumps.

Why were you drawn to two wheels?

Basically, the freedom and the ability to reasonably estimate the length of a journey. Obviously, the parking ease has huge benefits in Dublin. I do appreciate the comforts of a car though, especially when it's pouring rain on a January morning. However, the time advantage, together with the benefits of decent rain gear, has tipped the balance in favour of the bike.

Did you take any rider training?

I took lessons with the Irish School of Motoring on Dorset Street.

What does your insurance cost?

At the moment it's just under €500.

What car do you drive?

A Saab 95.

Did your family ever mind you biking?

I had a Yamaha DT 125 for college and my mum definitely worried. My wife often reminds me to be safe and wouldn't like me to get anything bigger than 125cc. I'm working on that though!

Do you worry about your survival?

Of course, but with any venture into traffic you're vulnerable. Admittedly, you are more exposed on a bike but driving positively and safely is as much as you can do. I would instinctively stay well clear of aggressive drivers and white vans.

What do you use your scooter for?

I drive to work everyday, which takes about 20 minutes. It's great for going to meetings, especially ones cropping up at short notice. I've a front carrier for my work documents or lap top and for shopping I've got a great glove box to store the occasional bottle of vino.

Have you ever had any accidents?

None on two wheels, touch wood. A few on four though, I wrote off my father's car the day before my driving test.

Do you follow motor sports?

I really enjoy watching the Isle of Man TT races. Especially the on-bike camera footage. In the Superbike Series Valentino Rossi is great to watch as he's a real genius on two wheels. I like to watch rallying and motocross too.

Have you taken any trips abroad on your scooter?

No, but it's something I would really like to do. With the demands of a young family I can only dream of a trip at this stage. I would love to drive across Europe and down through France especially. Of course a serious upgrade in machine would be required - the Vespa isn't exactly a Harley!

Have you any suggestions on how to improve conditions for bikers in this country?

I would agree that access to the bus lanes could be great and also that bit safer. I think mandatory lessons and perhaps some form of NCT for bikers would be good.

What are your tips for survival on two wheels?

Positive driving with a substantial helping of defensiveness; never forget most of them are bigger than you!

What's your dream machine?

The Honda Africa Twin 750 fully equipped for touring.
