• What was your first machine?
I'm still on my first - a 2002 Pearl Piaggio ET2, 50 cc scooter/moped.
• What attracted you to it, and indeed motorbikes?
Mainly, the gorgeous Italian design - mixing a modern design with the well loved classic style. But scooters are so economical. Obviously, the running costs are lower, but as a city dweller my parking costs are dramatically reduced. I was shocked by how expensive it was to rent a secure car park space in my apartment building - I was quoted over €€2,000 a year! In inner city Dublin, parking a car on the street is a very high risk that I didn't want to take. Having a scooter enables me to share our allocated secure space and parking in town is free!
My parents were very surprised I chose to buy a scooter. I'm the "worrier" in the family. They thought I didn't have the nerves to enjoy it, but I love my scooter and I wish I'd bought one sooner!
• How much did it cost?
€2,495.
• What did the insurance cost?
€352 a year - that's fully comprehensive.
• What do you use the machine for?
My scooter has given me such independence! I'm not relying on friends for lifts or waiting for buses any more. My time is precious. I design and make handmade cards and invitations as a hobby which keeps me very busy outside work. I can now use a lunch hour to nip across town to art suppliers, paper specialists and printers who close at weekends.
• How much do you spend on gear?
I got a great deal and all the gear I needed came with my new bike. I have a white Vespa full-face helmet worth €143, Rayven gloves worth €29.17, Rayven waterproof trousers which cost €26.40, a revolver lock costing €33. I was given my reflector band, and I bought my leather jacket a few years ago . . . I think it was around £80.
• What is your next upgrade likely to be?
I'd love a Piaggio ET4 - the 125 cc version of my bike. It's much faster!
• What's been your longest journey so far?
A two-hour marathon around Dublin during a lesson with the Irish Rider Training Association.
