The new XK coupé - our most advanced car yet, says Jaguar

Jaguar has released the first official pictures of its new XK sports coupé. The car will make its first public appearance at next months' Frankfurt motor show.

Jaguar claims this is the most technically advanced car it has ever built, with the chassis using the same aluminium monocoque structure technology as the XJ saloon. This keeps the weight down to 1,595kg, resulting in a power-to-weight boost of 10 per cent over the current XK.

Jaguar has tested the new XK in several locations, including Ireland, before launching the car. The forthcoming convertible version was spotted recently testing in the midlands. (Motors, August 3rd).

The look is evolutionary rather than a complete rethink. The Ford-owned marque does, however, play on the legendary E-Type, with a bonnet power bulge and a more practical hatchback look on the rear.

Longer, wider and higher than the cramped outgoing model, the new XK should make a better job of providing comfortable 2+2 seating. The cabin features a fashionable push-button start and a touch-screen display to control navigation, climate and sound system.

Other innovations include keyless entry, active headlights, electronic parking brake, adaptive cruise, run-flat tyres and tyre pressure monitoring.

The car goes on sale early next year, with prices expected to rise from the starting point of €100,765. Both convertible and supercharged versions will follow later in the year.
