DUE TO the sheer volume of cars in the supermini segment, it is impossible to deal with all the cars that qualify for the Government scrappage scheme here as nearly every manufacturer that makes a supermini will have at least one that qualifies for the scrappage scheme thanks to emissions of less than 140g/km. Below are the highlights.

The Fiat Punto starts at €9,995 under the scheme, with Fiat matching the Government’s €1,500 with a further €1,500. The same applies with the new Punto Evo model, which starts at €10,995 under the scheme. There is a more generous EcoPlus bonus of €1,740 and €2,460 off in addition to the €1,500 Government allowance on the outgoing Grande Punto models, meaning they can be picked up from €11,995.

One of the best superminis around is the new Ford Fiesta. The 1.25-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel qualify under the scrappage scheme and thanks to an additional discount from Ford, prices start from €11,700, outstanding value for a supermini of this quality. It is the bestselling car in its class so far this year.

The Hyundai i20 was already good value at €12,995 for the 1.2-litre three-door, but when you take €1,500 from the Government and €2,000 more from Hyundai this comes out at €9,495, or €10,495 for the five-door version.

The Kia Rio and the new Venga both offer savings. The Rio feels like it belongs to a larger segment, but with the 1.4-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel it qualifies for the scrappage scheme. A generous price reduction on the model makes for outstanding value with prices from €10,565 for the four- or five-door a 1.4-litre petrol engine or €11,740 with a diesel engine. The latter will be very inexpensive to run.

The Mazda2 is a great little car. Mazda are offering at least €3,500 off the three- or five-door models with prices starting from €10,995 for the 75bhp 1.3-litre three-door model. Remarkable value.

The Mitsubishi Colt is the only car from that brand that qualifies for the scrappage scheme. Mitsubishi matches the Government’s discount with an extra €1,500 until the end of March so prices start at €8,900 for the 75bhp 1.1. This car is well equipped and looks smart.

The Nissan Micra and Note qulaify for the scrappage deal, with a further €1,500 off each. This gives the well-equipped Micra a starting price of €11,995. A Band A emissions diesel Micra costs €13,820 under the scheme. The Note is a better buy: this clever, small MPV starts from €14,995 under the deal.

Most of the Opel Corsa range falls into either Band A or B and most Opel dealers will offer a total of €3,000 off the price of one under the scrappage scheme. This means €11,765 will secure the 1.0-litre five-door Corsa, although the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre CDTi diesel models also qualify. The Corsa is an attractive, sporty supermini, with the diesel model in particular worth a look. It also feels more substantial than its more tinny rivals.

The Peugeot 207 has grown in dimension but despite this, all the HDi diesel models and some of the 1.4-litre 95bhp petrol models qualify for the scrappage scheme with emissions of less than 140g/km. Peugeotoffers a total of €3,000 off including the Government’s allowance and that means you can get into a 207 1.4 HDi 70bhp diesel from €12,920, which is a good price for a five-door diesel car.

The Renault Clio comes with a reduction of €1,500 on top of the Government scrappage allowance and a trade-in allowance of in some cases up to €3,180. This means the Clio 1.2 Ethanol Royale Eco 3-door costs €8,990, with the five-door model starting from €11,280.

The new Seat Ibiza three-door starts from €11,445 with scrappage, or €11,845 for the five-door. Some Skoda dealers are offering discounts beyond the Governments €1,500 on the Fabia, There is a 4.99% APR finance offer available on these cars, which may be more useful in some cases.

There is a total of €3,000 available off the price of a new Toyota Yaris, with prices under the scheme starting from €11,935 for the five-door.

Volkwagen Polo, European Car of the Year, is a great car. It costs €12,995 under the scheme. There is €3,000 off the old Polo United, which now costs €9,935.
