Our wedding story: ‘a choice between a 1980s disco and a traditional band’

From the moment that Michael Ennis proposed to Niamh Sheeran all the couple wanted for their wedding day was a small, fun gathering for their close friends and family

From the moment on Christmas Eve 2013 that Michael Ennis proposed to Niamh Sheeran, on Ballymoney Beach, in Co Wexford, all the couple wanted for their wedding day was a small, fun gathering for their close friends and family.

They got exactly that on March 12th, 2015.

Niamh remembers driving through the pouring rain to SS Mary & Laurence church in Crookstown, Co Wicklow, with her uncle, Eugene Keenan.

“I couldn’t help but get emotional thinking of my parents who were no longer with us. But once inside the church I just wanted to get up to the top of the church to stand beside Michael. Nothing could get me up the aisle fast enough.”

Making the day even more special for the couple, who met in 2008, was Niamh’s childhood friend, Fr Brendan O’Sullivan, who travelled from Longford to perform the ceremony.

“We could definitely feel the love in the room and laughter featured a lot,” says the bride, who wore a dress from De Paor Designs. “Especially when we went to light our unity candles – we were shaking so much we both had to lean on the altar for support’.

Niamh praises her bridesmaids (in navy dresses from Weddings to You) Caitriona Fottrell, Caroline Kennedy and Louise McNally, along with Michael’s three brothers Philip, Mark and Peter, as being “an amazing support on the day”. The flower girls were nieces Kate and Anna.

After a five-course meal at Rathsallagh House Hotel, the guests were treated to a “grown-up house party” with a choice between a 1980s disco and a traditional band.

“It was magical,” says Niamh, “and without overusing the cliché, most definitely the happiest day of our lives. So far.”
