Three weeks ago we asked readers to send us their postcards for a modern Ireland – among the hundreds of entries were creative designs, stunning pictures and biting satire. Here's a selection of the best, to go with the winning postcard inserted in today's Irish Times

Brian Matthews

He says: “A view of the new Convention Centre through the metal bridge of the old dry dock. Ireland will continue to develop in the future.”

He says: "Generations of tourists have visited Ireland to savour its beautiful green landscapes. A recent edict from the International Monetary Fund could change all that. This drawing explores the consequences of the edict and its title is: The International Monetary Fund orders Ireland to reduce its 40 shades of green to 10 by 2015."

Niamh Gilmore

She says: “As a representation of modern Ireland, I made this image to explore what we are looking for when we look up into the sky. In this image, my camera looks to the perceived heavens and sees a reflected version of itself in every pane of glass above. I wanted to question whether the roof was bringing the outside sky into us – or were we trying to superimpose ourselves onto the clouds?”

Jessica Harding-Moore

She says: “This photo of two female zombies on the hunt for brains was taken in Temple Bar in Dublin in front of the Quays Pub. Where else in the world could you have a nice, relaxed pint while zombies attack the city outside?”

Liam Mulcahy

He says: “Take the 44C bus to Glencullen, pop off at the Blue Light, order a pint and go across the road and look down on Dublin – northwards to Howth, Ireland’s Eye and Lambay, and down below you Dún Laoghaire, the port, the yachts. All life is here, even in winter when snow falls and the local mountain men of Barnacullia – the stone men, the plumbers, the craftsman – enjoy a pint al fresco. And you never know who might pop in. Some tourists still call in looking for Adam Clayton who lives nearby.”

Pat Shaw

He says: “As one of our newest bridges in Dublin, the Samuel Beckett Bridge is a very modern piece of architecture. I took this picture through the hole in the bridge, because from it you could see three of our iconic buildings: the Custom House, Liberty Hall and the much-maligned Dublin Spire.”

Oonagh Charleton

She says: “I love this photo because it says everything that there is to say about the Irish and the Irish summer. I believe that the tourist would find it very amusing that we still attempt to enjoy the beach, a traditional summer pastime for all nationalities, in spite of the inclement Irish weather.
