THE SOCIAL NETWORK: Former TD Liz McManus introduced the speakers at the launch of Tony Heffernan – from Merrion Square to Merrion Street in Foley's Bar on Tuesday evening. The book charts the career of Heffernan, who was at the burning of the British Embassy in Merrion Square in 1972, and later became adviser, organiser and press spokesman in Government Buildings on Merrion Street.
The author of the book, Brian Kenny, mentioned that Heffernan had a phenomenal memory. Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte said: “Before Google, you telephoned Tony Heffernan. He was the source of information and very little got past him, except Ruairí Quinn’s ties.” On Heffernan’s political odyssey, Rabbitte said: “He spent most of his life fighting for the collapse of international capitalism, but he never thought that when it fell it would fall on top of him.”
