This week actor and comedian Deirdre O’Kane visits the podcast to tell Róisín about her role in Fiona Looney’s play Are You There Garth? It’s Me Margaret, which, as the title suggests, involves the tragic cancellation of certain gigs last summer.

“Margaret, poor Margaret, is just your average sort of mum who is down the country and has six really rough years with the recession and her husband hasn’t had work,” she says.

“It’s a really, really sweet story and it would break your heart. Your achy-breaky heart.”

She also tells Róisín about how she struggled to adopt the right approach to life as a professional actor.

“I would have benefited a lot from proper training,” she says. “I could have done with a strong wake-up call about getting jobs.

“Many’s the audition I waltzed into unprepared and wondered why I didn’t get it. I learned the hard way.”

Are You There Garth? It’s Me Margaret is on nightly at the Gaiety Theatre until October 25th.
