The serene, tactile homewares designed by Superfolk in west Mayo are an ideal antidote to our gaudy, over-designed world. Gearóid Muldowney who established his design studio in 2008, has just displayed his work at DesignMarch in Iceland, a festival inspired by the vibrancy of the "Pots and Pans Protests" against the financial skulduggery of Iceland's leaders. Superfolk products are, he says, "for people who love the wild outdoors": from simple trivets made of beech rings with storylines etched into the grain of the Irish-grown timber, to these ceramic tumblers of half-glazed Irish clay. A leather and oak camping stool is for "cooking freshly caught mackerel on the BBQ on a pier in Achill". superfolk.com
