Contigo Autoseal Kids Runabout Cup
They're champions of slick, non-spill water bottles and flasks. This version is aimed at kids, but Contigo's grown-up models would be just as practical for gifts. An autoseal opening where you press to sip means it's just about spill-proof – except perhaps, for doggedly determined youngsters. Luckily none of them will read this to test my confidence. They're BPA-free too, so another scare you can tick off the list.

Release your inner pirate with this pocket-sized monocular from Go Travel. It's got a reassuringly rubbery body and a foldable eye piece to get you a little closer to the action. And although it comes with a neck cord and carry case, there's no parrot or eye-patch.
