GoPro Hero 2014
GoPro's Hero range is the benchmark for all adventure cameras. This is an entry level model (pictured above), but still shoots 1080HD video. Useful functions include a QuikCapture mode where you can switch on and start recording with a single button press and Burst Photo for fast-action sequences. Multi-mountable with a selection of extreme-activity accessories and its own waterproof casing, it's an ideal gift for anyone who's fond of acts of daring-do.

Contigo Autoseal Kids Runabout Cup
They're champions of slick, non-spill water bottles and flasks. This version is aimed at kids, but Contigo's grown-up models would be just as practical for gifts. An autoseal opening where you press to sip means it's just about spill-proof – except perhaps, for doggedly determined youngsters. Luckily none of them will read this to test my confidence. They're BPA-free too, so another scare you can tick off the list.

Ljusa Wind-up Torch
Unlike pronouncing its name, the funkily-shaped Ljusa couldn't be simpler: it's a hand powered torch which never needs batteries. And the low-energy LED doesn't require much elbow grease to get it going.
