St Petersburg - Helicopters rescued up to 1,000 Russian fishermen yesterday from a giant ice floe which went adrift on Lake Ladoga, but six people were reported dead.

Russian television showed small groups of fishermen desperately clinging to diminishing slabs of ice as helicopters whirred overhead attempting to winch them to safety. They used knives to help secure a grip on the ice, heads lowered against the winds.
