BOGOTA – Ten Colombian soldiers on a mission to keep the peace before local elections have been killed in a guerrilla ambush in what the military called the deadliest attack it has suffered this year.
Colombia’s military has blamed the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia, or Farc, for detonating explosives yesterday as two military vehicles travelled in the southern province of Narino near the border with Ecuador, a region known for drug production and trafficking.
Guerrillas of the Farc and National Liberation Army traditionally stage attacks before elections. At least 41 candidates have been killed in pre-election violence, the an independent observer mission has said. – (Reuters)
