Ten gardaí have been killed in road accidents while on duty since 1998.
January 1998: Garda Eoin Fitzgerald (25) was killed when his car was in collision with another car in Mount Merrion, Co Dublin. He was responding to an emergency call.
September 1999: Garda Ambrose Fogarty (27) and Garda Richard Nolan (42) were killed when their car hit an ESB pole outside Gorey, Co Wexford. They were responding to an appeal for help from gardaí breaking up a street fight.
May 2000: Garda Conor Griffin (25) and Garda Gareth Harmon (28) were killed when their 10-year-old squad car crashed at Glasanon Road, Finglas. They were responding to a call for assistance from other gardaí pursuing a stolen car.
April 2001: Garda Seamus McIntyre (29) and Garda George Rice (45) were killed when their car was in a collision with a taxi in Cork city. They were responding to a call for assistance from other gardaí.
January 2002: Sgt Jim Dickson (40) was killed when his car was in collision with another car outside Dundalk. Sgt Dickson was attached to the National Surveillance Unit (NSU) and was on his way to carry out surveillance on suspected terrorists in Co Louth.
April 2002: Garda Anthony Tighe (53) and Garda Michael Padden (27) were killed yesterday morning when their squad car was struck by a stolen car driven by two teenagers on the Stillorgan dual carriageway in south county Dublin.
