A £13.7 million development plan for the South Hill district of Limerick was launched yesterday. The plan for the area, which includes 1,200 houses built by the local authority, was developed by a group of 28 organisations representing community, state, semi state, partnership and voluntary groups.
It covers a wide range of activities such as job creation, community facilities, youth, social and cultural, environmental, health and hygiene. It includes a training workshop and leisure facilities for young people, enterprise units and job creation initiatives, a children's nursery, a retirement village consisting of 20 units, a boxing club, Scout hall, a public gardens project, and a multipurpose sports and leisure centre.
The scheme is funded by the EU and state and semi state bodies, as well as by local sources.
FAS has worked closely with the South Hill community and features prominently in the initiatives detailed in the plan. Mr John Lynch, director general of FAS, said it represented an excellent example of what a local community, assisted by the relevant state agencies, could achieve for itself.
