One hundred jobs are to be created in Belfast with the establishment of a new engineering and research centre by the local subsidiary of a US-based company, it was announced today.
An investment of £17 million sterling by CEM Solutions - part of Tyco Fire & Security - will fund the setting up of a new centre of technical excellence and more than treble its current workforce of 47.
Tyco designs, manufactures, installs and services electronic security systems, fire protection, detection and suppression systems.
Its products are used to safeguard firefighters, prevent and fight fires, deter thieves and protect people and property.
The investment has been supported by an offer of investment aid of £1.75 million from Invest Northern Ireland, the province's economic development agency. The new centre will increase the competitiveness of CEM product engineering and design, it said.
Recruitment has started and all the jobs are planned to be in place by next March, said the company.
Announcing the jobs boost, Stephen Quinn, Permanent Secretary at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, hailed it as a significant investment by a blue chip organisation which would help sustain growth in a valuable ICT sector.
"Tyco's investment here sends out a clear message that Northern Ireland has a knowledge-rich technology infrastructure, and a highly talented workforce that can add value to the operations of global companies.
