A butcher whose premises a judge described as "shocking" was fined £2,100 yesterday. Zoubir Chennit, owner of Halal Meats, Grantham Street, Dublin, pleaded guilty to nine breaches of the EU Foodstuffs and Hygiene Regulations.

An environmental health officer, Ms Deirdre Cunniffe, said she found defective walls, floors and ceilings in a very dirty condition. There was blood on one wall and the cold room floor was dirty. Meat was stored in a freezer at minus 1 degree centigrade when it should have been minus 18 degrees.

Dublin District Court heard the premises was undergoing renovations.
