A reward of £20,000 is being offered for information leading to the conviction of the killers of Catholic postman Daniel McColgan.

It is understood the reward has been put forward by a number of community groups.

The unusual move was announced by the Police Service of Northern Ireland yesterday. The groups involved wish to remain anonymous.

Mr McColgan (20) was shot dead on January 12th as he arrived for work at the Barna Square sorting office in the loyalist Rathcoole estate on the outskirts of north Belfast.

The UDA was responsible for the killing but no one has yet been charged in connection with it.

The murder and ensuing threats against all Catholic postal workers led to widespread revulsion across the North which culminated in a series of peace rallies in Belfast and several town centres. Postal deliveries were suspended for two days.
