Residents of Mullingar will face greatly reduced traffic congestion after a bypass opened today.

Residents of Mullingar will face greatly reduced traffic congestion after a bypass opened today.

The N52 will that will take 70 per cent of vehicles out of the town centre.

It is hoped that the five kilometre bypass will also cut journey times by reducing the congestion that used to build up in the town.

The €25.4 million road was completed on time in little over 10 months.

Minister of State for Transport, "Pat the Cope Gallagher" said: "The N52 is an important cross country link, providing an eastern bypass of the town of Mullingar for north south traffic.

"The opening of the N52 bypass today therefore forms part of the strategic national roads policy to improve the primary and secondary road networks as provided for in Transport 21."
