A woman who suffered "devastating" injuries including a severe brain injury in a road accident has settled her action for some €500,000. The settlement was approved by Mr Justice Richard Johnson at the High Court yesterday.

The court was told by Gerry Tynan SC, for Mary Daly of Ballinglanna, Glanmire, Co Cork, that an application would be made at a later stage to have his client made a ward of court. Counsel said the injuries Ms Daly had suffered were devastating.

The settlement was approved against building contractors McGinty and O'Shea Ltd, of Sarsfield Court Industrial Estate, Glanmire, Co Cork. In her statement of claim, Ms Daly said she was driving near Courtstown, Little Island, Co Cork, on June 15th, 2000, on a stretch of road where McGinty and O'Shea and Cork County Council were engaged in works of engineering construction.

She claimed that a vehicle, the property of a man against whom no award was given, collided with her vehicle resulting in her suffering severe personal injury, loss and damage.

It was submitted that the defendants failed to have adequate signs to warn local traffic of the dangers associated with the roadworks in question.
