Luanda - Angolan rebels abducted 60 orphans aged between 10 and 18 in a raid on Saturday on the town of Caxito, aid workers said yesterday. State television had already reported on Monday that at least 69 civilians had died in the raid, 50 km from the capital, Luanda, and the agencies said the toll could be 100.

The rebels kidnapped 51 boys and nine girls from a boarding school for war orphans outside Caxito, according to Ms Rikke Viholm, spokeswoman for Development Aid from People to People (ADPP), which runs the school. Two adults were also seized. The attack has been blamed on UNITA.
