NAIROBI - At least 77 people were killed or drowned in the Kerio river in Kenya's Rift Valley after elan violence involving rustling. A police spokesman said security officers shot dead seven cattle rustlers, while up to 70 others drowned in a swollen river.

Mr Jackson Kalweo, minister in charge of internal security, said the government was arranging reconciliation meetings and urged people to remain calm. He made no mention of the drownings or killings by security forces.

In a separate incident, more than 40 villagers were feared drowned in floods at Kilifi, in Kenya's coastal region.
