Amman - King Abdullah of Jordan appointed a new army chief yesterday, replacing an officer who was a close confidant of late King Hussein.

A royal decree appointed Maj-Gen Mohammad Malkawi as joint chief of staff of the armed forces. The outgoing commander, Field Marshal Abdul-Hafez al-Kaabneh, has been appointed a military adviser to the monarch.
