Andrei Shevchenko scored the crucial spot-kick as AC Milan overcame Juventus in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to clinch the Champions League at Old Trafford tonight.

The prolific Ukraine marksman followed up Serginho and Alessandro Nesta efforts from 12 yards to earn Milan a 3-2 victory - after David Trezeguet, Alessandro Birindelli and Paolo Montero had all missed from the spot for Serie A champions Juve.

Milan marginally deserved their momentous win - the sixth in their history - in a match that swung both ways throughout normal play and extra-time.

And it was Shevchenko who sparked off wild celebrations at a packed Old Trafford with the last kick of the game.

Milan were twice aggrieved to see refereeing decisions go against them in what proved to be an entertaining opening.

Filippo Inzaghi thought he had won his side a penalty when he appeared to be tugged by Igor Tudor but German referee Markus Merk waved the protests away.

And there was further controversy within a minute when Shevchenko saw his deflected effort cancelled out, with Inzaghi and Rui Costa adjudged to be standing in offside positions.

At the other end, Trezeguet spurned a glorious chance when he headed a Lilian Thuram cross wide although Nesta may have put him off at the last minute. Gianluigi Buffon then earned his corn with a superb save to his left to deny Inzaghi from a teasing Clarence Seedorf cross.

Juventus responded in turn, with Edgar Davids at his pressing and probing best, although Alessandro Del Piero's curling effort never threatened Nelson Dida.

Rui Costa's scuffed effort was equally disappointing before Del Piero tried his luck again, this time from a tight angle that forced Dida to parry to safety.

Mauro Camoranesi and Gianluca Zambrotta then saw their efforts blocked before Ciro Ferrara came within a whisker of finding the net as Juve went for the jugular in the closing stages.

The Old Lady gave an indication of their intentions after the restart when substitute Antonio Conte smacked the crossbar with a diving header that had Dida clutching thin air.

But it was Paolo Maldini - making his sixth Champions League final appearance - who squandered a golden opportunity to steal the script when he glanced an Andrea Pirlo cross wide.

Davids was then taken off injured as a flurry of bookings and substitutions followed and the match degenerated into a battle of wits before Inzaghi almost broke the deadlock with a diving header from a Serginho cross.

Milan sensed an upset in the dying seconds of normal time but Buffon's save from Seedorf typified Juventus' resistance.

Marcelo Zalayeta met fellow substitute Birindelli's lofted cross with the match not long underway in silver-goal extra-time but could only direct his header into the sidenetting under pressure from Buffon.

Conte and Del Piero also fired high and wide as Juve looked to pinch a crucial winner.

Conte tried to win Juve a penalty in the second period but referee Merk rightly brushed off his theatricals under a half challenge from Nesta.

Del Piero then fired a routine shot high before Thuram intercepted a Shevchenko cross with Inzaghi lurking to send the game into a penalty shoot-out.
