Kabul - An important opposition commander in the Afghan province of Laghaman said yesterday he had joined the ruling Taliban militia along with 3,000 supporters.

Commander Abdullah Jan told a news conference he had decided not to fight against Taliban troops after realising the "futility" of continuing hostilities in the country, ravaged by two decades of civil war.
