The demobilisation of Sudanese child soldiers by UNICEF earlier this year has turned into an operational nightmare, according to other aid agencies.

The project has been abused, the agencies claim - many families forced children to participate in the scheme who had no right to do so.

Food ran out and discipline broke down, with some 1,300 more boys than UNICEF had planned being packed into its demobilisation camps. Some boys protested at the compound, where aid workers enjoyed four-course meals
