Mr Ahern said: "I would like to take this opportunity to pass on my congratulations to Prime Minister Blair and his colleagues on their success in the General Election and in securing an historic second term.
"The Irish government at ministerial level, and of course most particularly at head of Government level, have worked closely with their British counterparts since 1997 and we look forward to maintaining this co-operation.
"We recognise and appreciate the time and effort the Prime Minister has given to the peace process and that intensive work will continue in the period immediately ahead."
