Ahern to attend NI peace conference

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern today committed himself to a conference marking the 10th anniversary of the Belfast Agreement.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern today committed himself to a conference marking the 10th anniversary of the Belfast Agreement.

Mr Ahern will join former US president Bill Clinton, former Stormont talks chairman Senator George Mitchell and other negotiators at the event in Belfast's Queen's University next month to reflect on the legacy of the peace accord.

The conference will also involve Stormont Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, decommissioning body chief General John de Chastelain, Nobel Peace Prize laureate John Hume, Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, nationalist SDLP leader Mark Durkan, and Ulster Unionist leader Sir Reg Empey.

Trina Vargo, president of the US-Ireland Alliance, which is organising the event, said: "The Taoiseach has been tireless in his efforts to bring lasting peace to Northern Ireland. We are honoured that he will be participating.
