The Taoiseach and the British Prime Minister are due to meet this evening in an effort to push forward the Northern Ireland peace talks.

Mr Ahern and Mr Tony Blair will meet in private followinga dinner with other EU leaders and the US Presidenton the eve of their summit in Gothenberg in Sweden.

They will discuss the implications of the Westminster and local government election results in the North - which showed great gains for the DUP and Sinn Féin.

They are expected to try to agree a timetable for the next two weeks of crucial talks on the North that will determine the fate of the Belfast Agreement.

YesterdayMr Ahern met Sinn Féin’s four MPs elected in last week's election.
