Jerusalem - The Israeli army said yesterday it had allowed for the first time humanitarian aid from Syria and Libya, countries it considers "enemy states", to enter Palestinian areas. The army said it had allowed 22 aid packages that included everything from toothpaste to ambulances to enter Israel's international airport in Tel Aviv and across its borders with Jordan and Egypt.

The aid reached the Palestinian Authority after 19 days of bloody clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinians.

Israel has imposed a closure on the West Bank and Gaza Strip, closed their external borders and deployed tanks and troops around Palestinian towns and villages to prevent residents from going in and out.
