Rome - The number of AIDS orphans in Africa is set to rise even if infection rates drop, increasing the burden on women and older people, a senior UN official said yesterday.

"Our fear is for the future. Even if the infection rate drops now, you will have a backlog of infected population," Dr Gary Howe, director of the Africa division of the United Nations' International Fund for Agricultural Development, said.
