Pristina - Kosovo Albanian leaders said yesterday they would support a UN plan which paves the way for elections but complained it did not include the possibility of a referendum on independence. Serb leaders were highly critical of the plan, branding it "unacceptable" and "very problematic" while Russia, Serbia's traditional ally, said it amounted to appeasement of ethnic Albanian separatists.

Meanwhile, Macedonia yesterday gave ethnic Albanian guerrillas 48 hours to clear out of its northern hills while neighbouring Yugoslavia battled another Albanian rebel force for the fourth day running.
