SDLP Leader Mr Mark Durkan warned today about the lack of inclusivity in the Northern Ireland peace process.
Speaking after a meeting with the Taoiseach Mr Bertie Ahern in Dublin Mr Durkan said he was concerned that all parties should be involved in the bid to secure an election.
And he warned that an election could be the "last chance" for honesty in the peace process.
He said: "If you are going to get movement that's totally comprehensive, an inclusive process is needed.
"We want to see positive things happen in relation to paramilitary activity....and in relation to commitment to the institutions from unionists."
Earlier this week the SDLP expressed concern about not being invited to attend a key meeting at Downing Street with the British Prime Minister and the Taoiseach - despite Sinn Fein and the Ulster Unionists being present.
Mr Durkan said today that Sinn Fein and the Ulster Unionists had taken a year of suspension to bring themselves to a point were they were moving positively.
But he said he had doubts about whether what had been put together as a deal would hold in the future.
"We want this process done on a proper footing in the future," he said. He added: "We believe that this process has lost its way.
"The election we will have is going to be a last chance for honesty in this process." He also warned against the process being held hostage to the humours of the "people in bowler hats and the people in balaclavas" - the Ulster Unionists and the IRA.
