CONTINUING RELUCTANCE among people to spend money has led nearly 50 per cent of all businesses in the Republic to conclude that their prospects for the three months between September and November are poor, according to a new survey.

Retail Ireland, the group that represents the Irish retail sector, found 46 per cent of retailers rated the prospects for their business over the period as poor while 54 per cent predicted business would be average with none thinking it would be good.

Retail Ireland chairman and Topaz director Frank Gleeson said there would be no end to the recession until people feel confident to begin spending again.

He said people were “simply too nervous to spend”.
