Holden Garfield is a foreign correspondent shattered by the horrors he has witnessed in Srebrenica. Marianne is the sister of his journalistic mentor, rendered amnesiac by witnessing the horrific deaths of her husband and children in a tornado. He visits her in hospital and, bam! They are in lust or, as Wiggins puts it, "If she could help him to forget, he could help her to remember". Wiggins writes like a woman demented; a mad, writhing, self-conscious torrent of stream-of-consciousness prose which is perhaps meant to emulate the energy of an electrical storm but which this reader found irritating to the point of impenetrability. Add in a clutch of eminently dislikeable characters and a distinct whiff of misogyny (yes, misogyny); this is love it or hate it stuff, and I hated it.
