The ambulance driver who died in a crash yesterday morning as he was transporting a patient to hospital for emergency treatment has been named.

He was John O'Mahony from Ballinascarthy in West Cork. He died when the ambulance Mr O'Mahony was driving hit a ditch at Tureen on the main Bandon to Cork city road.

The 42-year-old driver was taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) for treatment. He was declared dead shortly before 11am.

The patient who was being transported is in a critical but stable condition in CUH. A second medical technician who was in the ambulance is also being treated in hospital where he is described as being in a stable condition.
