In our edition of January 22nd last we reported on the evidence given by Mr Andy Madden, solicitor, a partner in Cahill & Co, to the Mahon tribunal on January 21st, 2005.
This evidence related to a transaction concerning the purchase of 55 acres of land at Coolamber, near Lucan, west Dublin, in the years 1989 to 1994. Mr Madden acted for the intended purchaser, Mr Joe Tiernan. The Irish Times accepts that Cahill & Co was never "on the line" in respect of its handling of the matter and that Mr Madden was not sidelined from the transaction by its principal, Mr Finbar Cahill. We regret the upset caused to Mr Madden and Mr Cahill by suggestions to the contrary.
