An Angolan with no previous convictions was sentenced to two months' jail yesterday for breach of public order in Dublin's O'Connell Street. Abdul Ajelon Pedro (25), of Bonham Street, Dublin, was found fighting with a Dublin man near O'Connell Bridge at about 3 a.m. last Friday and pleaded guilty to a breach of the peace.

Mr Murrough O'Rouke, defending, said his client claimed to have been acting in self-defence while other parties involved said he started the fight following an exchange of words. The defendant was a university graduate who had never been in trouble before, Dublin District Court was told.

Judge Con O'Leary refused to suspend the sentence and said: "I will not take fighting on O'Connell Street, or any street."
