Gardaí said a series of protests by anti-bin tax campaigners in Dublin this afternoon passed off without incident.
The Dublin City Campaign Against the Bin Tax organised a number of protests by opponents of the charge at noon today.
The group has responded angrily to the decision by the High Court today to jail the campaigner leaders Deputy Joe Higgins and Cllr Clare Daly for one month for breaching an injunction granted to Fingal County Council.
"To jail people for non-violent and legitimate protest is a serious attempt to intimidate the anti bin tax campaign. This represents an outrageous attack on civil liberties."
While the Ansbacher frauds are treated with kid gloves, working class activists protesting against double taxation are met with the full vigour of the law", said Ms Brid Smith, campaign spokesperson.
The campaigners claim today's action marks an escalation of the protests against bin charges. Leaders of the campaign are to meet later today to plan further protests.
