Gardaí investigating the murder in Dublin of Lithuanian national Andrius Zakarauskas on November 20th are appealing for witnesses.

They want to speak to two taxi-drivers who stopped at the Texaco service station on the Howth Road, Raheny, at 2.30 a.m. The first was driving a green Skoda Octavia and the second a navy hatchback. The drivers are asked to ring Fitzgibbon Street Garda station on 1800 218 219 or 6668400.

Gardaí have arrested a 22-year-old non-national in relation to the fatal stabbing of Mr Zakarauskas, which occurred at about 12.15 a.m. at St Joseph's Villas, Dublin. He was arrested in Mullingar.

Gardaí have reopened an investigation into a serious fire at a Kilkenny city school.

A senior officer confirmed that new information had come to light on the fire at the Kilkenny City Vocational School on March 3rd, 2003.

Death of leading Limerick man

The death occurred yesterday, after a short illness, of George Edward (Ted) Russell (92) of Limerick, who was a Freeman of the city and a leading businessman and public figure for half a century.

Mr Russell was five times mayor of the city and an Independent member of Dáil Éireann for one term, and a member of Seanad Eireann from 1969-77.

He is survived by his wife, his son and three daughters.

Concerns over asbestos plant

Money is flowing into a community fund set up to finance opposition to a proposed asbestos recycling plant in Killala, Co Mayo, writes Tom Shiel.

Mr Liam Caffrey, chairman of the group, said thousands of euro had been donated so far.

Twenty family doctors and a coroner in the region have expressed concerns about the health implications of the plant.

A number of local TDs spoke at a public meeting in Enniscrone, Co Sligo on Saturday night.
